Freedom of the Parish

The Local Government Act 1972 s249 (5) allows the council to grant the title of Honorary Freeman or Freewoman of Roade Parish in recognition of the eminent services rendered by an individual to the community. Granting the Freedom of the Parish is the highest honour that the Parish Council can bestow. Although it carries no powers, rights or privileges, those who receive the honour are able to use the title of Freeman or Freewoman.

Roade's Honorary Freemen and Freewomen

Mr Cecil Bottomley - First Honorary Freeman of Roade

At an extra ordinary meeting of the parish council held on Monday 17th March 2014 the council resolved to present Cecil Bottomley to be an Honorary Freeman of Roade Parish in recognition of the eminent services rendered by him to the Parish Council. Cecil was a founder trustee of the Village Hall & Playing Field Charity, Chairman for many years and an active member for 46 years until his retirement in 2014. He was a District Councillor at South Northants and latterly a Parish councillor since 1994 where he also spent a number of years as Chairman. The Chairman of the Council, Cllr Sue Mallock formally presented Mr Bottomley with his award at the Annual Parish Meeting on Thursday 8th May 2014.

At an extra ordinary meeting of the parish council held on Monday 17th March 2014 the council resolved to present Cecil Bottomley to be an Honorary Freeman of Roade Parish in recognition of the eminent services rendered by him to the Parish Council.

Cecil was a founder trustee of the Village Hall & Playing Field Charity, Chairman for many years and an active member for 46 years until his retirement in 2014. He was a District Councillor at South Northants and latterly a Parish councillor since 1994 where he also spent a number of years as Chairman.

The Chairman of the Council, Cllr Sue Mallock formally presented Mr Bottomley with his award at the Annual Parish Meeting on Thursday 8th May 2014.

Mr Shamsher Chatur - Honorary Freeman of Roade

At an extra ordinary meeting of the parish council held on Monday 31st October 2022, the council resolved to present Shamsher Chatur to be an Honorary Freeman of Roade Parish in recognition of the eminent services rendered by him to the Parish Council. For services rendered to the community for 20 years, during that time his hard work ensured that the village post office was classified as a main post office. The Chairman of the Council, Cllr Lorne Murray formally presented Mr Chatur with his award at his farewell drinks reception held at Roade Village Hall on Saturday 19th November 2022.

At an extra ordinary meeting of the parish council held on Monday 31st October 2022, the council resolved to present Shamsher Chatur to be an Honorary Freeman of Roade Parish in recognition of the eminent services rendered by him to the Parish Council.

For services rendered to the community for 20 years, during that time his hard work ensured that the village post office was classified as a main post office.

At an extra ordinary meeting of the parish council held on Monday 31st October 2022, the council resolved to present Nilufa Chatur to be an Honorary Freewoman of Roade Parish in recognition of the eminent services rendered by her to the Parish Council. For services rendered to the community for 20 years, during that time her hard work ensured that the village post office was classified as a main post office. Mr William John McLaren Marshall - Honorary Freeman of the Parish.

At an extra ordinary meeting of the parish council held on Monday 31st October 2022, the council resolved to present William John McLaren Marshall to be an Honorary Freeman of Roade Parish in recognition of the eminent services rendered by him to the Parish Council. For his valuable and devoted services rendered to the community for 31 years – during that time, he served in many positions and held high offices of Clerk and Councillor to the Council, Chairman of the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, Parent Governor, Vice Chair and Chairman of Governors to Roade Primary School and Parent Governor to Roade School. The Council formally presented Mr Marshall with his award at the Christmas light switch on event held at Roade Library on Saturday 26th November 2022.
